On April 11, 2006 CAIR/Sacramento Bee reported, "Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets in more than 120 cities across the country Monday, in what was billed as a National Day of Action for Immigrant Justice. From Pensacola, Fla., to Sacramento, in Arizona as well as Atlanta, peaceful protesters chanted, marched and waved signs demanding rights for immigrants, legal or not. The protests were the latest chapter in a burgeoning backlash against proposed immigration law changes... The march from Southside Park to the state Capitol also included about 30 members of local Muslim groups, said Basim Elkarra, executive director of the Sacramento Valley chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. He said members of his group as well as the UC Davis Muslim Students Association wanted to show they share the Latino community's concern about immigration proposals... 'The same folks that are attacking our community are attacking the immigrants and Latino communities. We're concerned about the direction of the debate,' Elkarra said."
