SDP Institute: Data Visualization and Communication
Transform data dashboards and presentations into compelling tools for improvement
Data can tell a powerful story about student success. It can help us see which students are beating the odds, and which learners need additional support to succeed in their academic plans. This course will develop your narrative skills to create beautiful and compelling visualizations to share these stories with leaders, educators, even learners themselves. Over four sessions, you’ll delve into dashboards and polish your presentations, each day learning targeted communication strategies to inspire action.
Workshop Objectives:
- Grow your skills in four key data communication competencies: visuals, dashboards, presentations and coaching conversations.
- Use cognitive science principles to design effective data visuals that increase recall and understanding.
- Understand the various types of data dashboards, and how to avoid common mistakes in this complex data format.
- Learn how to assess the efficacy of your data visuals with users for continuous improvement.
- Craft a well-structured and compelling presentation for different audiences.
- Practice different strategies to facilitate an actionable dialogue rooted in data.
- Draft visuals, presentations, and data communications plans, and improve them based on what you learn each session.
- Receive feedback on your data communications to improve your practice
Topics Not Covered:
- This is not a software product training course. We will share tips and tricks to designing useful visualizations that can be applied generically to the software products you use (Tableau, Excel, Stata, Power BI etc.).
