In 1983, a few local Zoroastrian families who had been meeting in private homes since the late 1970s came together to form the Zoroastrian Association of the Greater Boston Area (ZAGBA). The organization was officially registered in the state of Massachusetts in 1984. ZAGBA continues to meet in members’ homes, as well as in rented halls. The Association sponsors lectures, children’s classes, adult discussion groups, and annual celebrations of Navroze, a spring festival of the renewal of life. All events are open to the general public, but newcomers should call in advance for schedule and directions. Although there is no regular publication of materials, the Association maintains a website and an online discussion group. ZAGBA is associated with the Zoroastrian Students of Boston (ZSB), an organization of young Zoroastrians who gather for events and discussions. On the first Sunday of each month, the ZSB organizes the Gatha Study Group on the Harvard campus: the Gathas are a collection of subtle and complex hymns composed by Zarathushtra. In July of 2009, ZAGBA celebrated its 25th anniversary with over 200 people, including some of the families who originally developed the organization. At the anniversary event, community leaders described their rich past and their vision for the future. Many Boston Zoroastrians dream of creating a “home” for this small but vital community, and hope one day to develop a Zarathushti Center of Boston as a dedicated place for worship, gathering, and education. ZAGBA welcomes new members who have not been born in Zoroastrian families.
