History

The 1990s saw a tremendous increase in the South Asia population in the Bay Area. The founding members felt there was a need for a temple within the South Bay region, since the majority of the Indians resided primarily within San Jose, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara. Therefore, in September of 1994 the Hindu temple and community center of South Bay was established through the appropriation of an existing warehouse. Located within a light industrial zone, the existing L-shaped one-storey warehouse was established over a 3.8 acre lot.

Description

The interior spaces of the warehouse building (Photo 1)consist of two large open spaces which have been modified to function as separate religious and cultural spaces. Over the last decade no major spatial modifications apart from cosmetic changes in terms of floor carpeting, electrical rewiring and so on have been done. However, with the lack of initial revenue one of the first decisions was to rent a part of the warehouse as a space for performing cultural activities. Hence, one part of the L-shaped building was devoted towards creating a cultural hall and thereby, a stage and the supporting facilities were constructed. Today, temple executive committee hopes to rebuild on the same physical footprint a normative traditional style temple architecture in the hopes of creating a visible public identity. However, the main reason often cited for the delay in the progress of making this vision a reality is often grounded in economics. The cost of building a traditional style temple is very high.
