Activities and Schedule

The congregation meets once a month during the weekend for worship. Normally, about 60 people attend. The service starts around 11:00 A.M. and ends around 1:30 P.M.

The Gurdwara, when complete and open for service, will probably have more meetings and more activities. There will be activities for children, including singing hymns, learning the scripture, studying the Punjabi language, and other activities to teach the children about the community.

The community has a quarterly newsletter called The Sikh Heritage News.

History

For the last twenty years, Sikh families living in Charlotte have felt the need to have their own place of worship. At first, they met at the homes of different individuals once a month, usually on weekends. Families or individuals took turns hosting or sponsoring the monthly service. Then last year they began meeting at the Hindu Center. Previously, they used the Hindu Center only for Founder’s Day (Guru Nanak’s birthday). Normally, they invite their Hindu friends to the service.

At the beginning of the last year, the community gathered to found the Sikh Heritage Society of Greater Charlotte. In June 2001 they approved the constitution and elected an ad hoc Board of Directors.

The monthly religious service takes place at the Hindu Center and will continue to do so until the Gurdwara (house of God) is built. The foundation is expected to be laid at the Baisakhi celebration on April 13, 2002.
