Dr. Mark MacWilliams

Dr. Mark MacWilliams is a professor of religious studies at St. Lawrence University. He became a Pluralism Project affiliate in 1999 and conducted a multi-year study of the religious diversity present in St. Lawrence county in Northern New York. Dr. MacWilliams and his students created a reference map of the religious life of St. Lawrence County and, during the first year of the study alone, studied nine religious groups in depth. This research project was an integral part of Dr. MacWilliams' course "Exploring American Spiritual Diversity" from 1999 to 2003 and students were introduced to Buddhist, Muslim, and Hindu religious communities that were more recently being established in the area, as well as the Amish and Mohawk Indian communities that have long been a part of Northern New York's religious landscape.
