On January 14, 2002, The New York Daily News reported that "youths from the Islamic Center of Long Island, a Westbury [NY] mosque, set out to defend their faith after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks... The result was the largest collection ever for the mosque's third annual food drive... Much of the donations, which included boxes of cereal and juices, would go on to youth shelters and homes where they are sorely needed... Muslims practice charity as one of the 'five pillars of Islam'... Some in the youth program said they hoped that the food drive separates the actions of terrorists who call themselves Muslims from the true spirit of Islam."
