In his prayer opening the City Council meeting here Monday night, Pastor Randall Parnell of Northside Baptist Church proclaimed, “Let it be known that right here in Woodruff, South Carolina, we believe in Jesus Christ our savior.”

Nearly all of the 30 people in the crowd said, “Amen,” and a round of applause followed the closing of the prayer.

The applause was aimed at a letter city officials recently received asking for the end of prayer opening public meetings — or, at least, for the substitution of a moment of silence — and for the removal of the cross from the city's seal.
