On November 12, 2004 PBS Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly provided a report concerning the status of women within American Muslim culture. "In this country, immigrants of many faiths have struggled to adapt their traditional practices to American culture. Now, some American Muslims are trying to change the way mosques treat women. Muslim men and women traditionally pray in separate spaces, but in some mosques, women say their space is second-class." News journalist Asra Nomani was reported saying, "ultimately, barriers that are placed in front of women are barriers to full participation and leadership in our communities. They're symbolic of this greater denial of women's rights that we have to confront in the Muslim world."
