A Dearborn Heights woman said Wednesday she was terrified and humiliated when a judge told her to remove her Islamic head scarf.

But Wayne County Circuit Judge J. William Callahan, who was sued in federal court Wednesday by Raneen Albaghdady and the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, issued a statement that said he would not have asked the woman to remove the scarf at a June 16 hearing for a name change if he knew the scarf was religious.
