The birth of China's ancient philosopher Confucius could become a public holiday in Hong Kong, according to media reports Tuesday. Hong Kong is considering shortening the three-day Easter break by one day in order to make way for the celebration of Confucius' birth later in the year.

Leaders of Confucianism in Hong Kong have been campaigning for more than a decade for an official public holiday to commemorate the Chinese philisopher. Now it looks like their prayers have been answered.

A report Tuesday in the South China Morning Post claimed the move is supported by the Catholic and Anglican Church in Hong Kong, which have agreed in principle to give up one of their holidays to Confucianism.

The move would mean Hong Kong's 17 public holidays a year cover three religions. Buddha's birthday became a public holiday in 1999.
