On August 14, 2003 The Washington Post reported that "a windowpane was broken at the Islamic Cultural Center in Old Town Alexandria on Tuesday night or early yesterday, and Alexandria police are investigating whether it was a hate crime, police said.
The center...is operated by Hazim Barakat, whose Old Town Islamic Bookstore was vandalized soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, police said. In that case, bricks with anti-Arab messages attached to them were thrown through the windows of the store. No arrest was made in that case. The bookstore is now closed."
