Friends Heba Elkobaitry, a Muslim of Egyptian heritage, and Nancy Lazarus, a Reform Jew from Maryland, have big goals for interfaith understanding. Members of an informal five-member "faith club" with three Christians on the Virginia Peninsula, the pair work together in the community and at their children's school in York County to expand comparative religious education and tolerance.

On a recent Sunday morning, the two arranged for students from Lazarus' synagogue, Beth El Temple in Williamsburg, to visit the mosque in Hampton where Elkobaitry's family worships. Ahmed Noor, a co-founder and trustee of the mosque, and his wife ZiZi, welcomed two dozen Jewish students from second through sixth grade, their parents and teachers, and their rabbi, Me'irah Iliinsky, to an introductory talk about Islam and the Muslim faith.
