On May 19, 2002, The Washington Post reported on the "growing number of college-age women -- many with
mothers who do not cover their hair -- who have made the choice to wear
scarfs, an Islamic expression of female modesty... In the United States, dozens of Muslim women's Web sites have posted
articles and held chat room debates for those who are considering
wearing the hijab... Around the University of Maryland's campus,... Madeline Zilfi, a professor of Middle Eastern history, said she has been
curious about the trend...
She terms the practice of wearing hip American outfits and trendy chunky
shoes with a matching head scarf 'Hijab chic.' And she thinks it's a
healthy way for the women to express their feelings and blend their
American culture with Muslim pride."
