On November 21, 2003 Tolerance published an article on "Waking the American Dream," a performance piece by poet and actor Sarah Jones that chronicles the narratives of American immigrants. The piece tells the story of a Pakistani accountant named Mohammed Ali, a 20-something Vietnamese guy, a wealthy Haitian immigrant, and a Chinese woman who comes to grips with her daughter's sexuality and ultimately stands behind her fight for same-sex marriage rights. Jones says that she "really wanted to show the complexity of their stories. We realized that not only did we have the Sept. 10 issues to contend with but also the post-Sept. 11 issues — the really nakedly racist and ethnically focused attacks on immigrants, particularly Muslims and people of Middle Eastern descent and Arabs."
