On January 10, 2004 The Advocate ran a feature article on Vietnamese monk Thich dao Quang, Baton Rouge's only Buddhist monk: "The journey that brought Quang to Baton Rouge goes back to when he was 8 years old..Growing up under Communism, Quang said he saw inequality and discrimination throughout Vietnamese society...Seeking to understand why there were inequities in the world and what he could do about it, Quang entered the Thuong Chieu Monastery in 1991. 'I saw Buddhism as a way to find my true self and the meaning in my life,' Quang said. In 1994, the Vietnamese government granted Quang's father permission to move his family to the United States. Under provisions by President Reagan, anyone who had spent more than three years in a Vietnamese re-education camp could immigrate to the United States, Quang said."
