On October 30, 2003 Calitoday reported that "in major cities throughout California, Vietnamese both young and old gathered to light candles or wield signs to protest a renewed crackdown on religious freedoms in Vietnam... In the past month, Hanoi has tracked, detained and arrested Buddhist clergy in the country with new fervor. Vietnamese daily CaliToday publisher Nam Nguyen says this is in part because Vietnam's government feels the movement for greater religious freedom is gaining steam thanks to the efforts of the powerful Vietnamese overseas community. They number approximately 500,000 in California alone, and approximately 3 million worldwide."
