On June 16, 2005 the Daily Times reported, "The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday asked Hindus to be virile and increase their numbers to counter the 'unbridled' growth in the Muslim population... Reading out a resolution on ‘population imbalance’ adopted on the second day of the central advisory board meeting, Swami Avedeshanand Giri urged the Hindu society increase the community’s population, saying, 'A society with a large population commands greater influence in the world and it is a myth that increased population increases unemployment.' Giri said the population increase was a must to 'counter the dangerous crisis posed by the increase in the Muslim population.' The resolution highlighted that the 2001 census showed the Hindu population had increased by 20 percent and the Muslim growth rate was 36 percent. It expressed apprehension that dozens of districts bordering Bangladesh in Assam, Tripura and West Bengal were on the verge of becoming Muslim majority."
