On January 28, 2001, The Oregonian reported on Indian families in the Northwest who are trying to learn what happened to their relatives in the recent 7.9-magnitude earthquake in India, and who feel helpless to relieve the suffering. "Oregon and Southwest Washington are home to thousands of people from India, many of whom came to the United States to study or work in the high-tech field...A local association of Gujarat natives...plans to raise money to send to religious groups providing aid." Women at Brahama Premanda Ashram, a Hindu temple in Beaverton, plan to pray for the victims of the earthquake.
