On September 12, 2001, Governor Gray Davis issued a press release urging tolerance. The press release read, in part: "'Our great nation is great because of our diversity and tolerance for people of all cultures and religions,' Governor Davis said. 'In the coming days, we must talk to our children and calm their fears. And we must not let our justified rage at terrorist acts destroy the very spirit of tolerance and unity that makes our country strong.'" He continued, "...'let us as Californians and Americans focus our energies on the values of compassion and tolerance that are the hallmarks of what it means to be an American.'"
