On April 19, 2005 the Chicago Tribune reported, "Protesting the absence of women in the conclave by using a puff of pink smoke, a group of Roman Catholic nuns and lay women Monday called on church leaders to select a new pope who supports ordaining women as priests. About 50 demonstrators gathered on the steps of Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago as 115 cardinals opened secret talks inside the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican on the next leader of the Catholic Church. Holding banners and signs, the activists denounced the papal conclave as an archaic, male-dominated structure and demanded a greater role for women in the church. The Women's Ordination Conference, which organized the Chicago protest, held similar demonstrations nationwide."
