On November 17, 2002 the Democrat and Chronicle reported that "with nonstop prayer and 24-hour reading of their sacred scriptures, local Sikhs are celebrating the birthday of the founder of their faith. In their newly renovated Penfield temple, called Gurdwara or 'Door of the Teacher,' the 150 Sikh families of the Rochester area also will gather today and again on Tuesday for a community celebration. It’s all in honor of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who was born 533 years ago in what is now Pakistan. In Rochester, the celebration centers on the temple, the giving of time and donations, and gifts of toys, clothing and other items for the children. The first Sikhs in Rochester came about 25 years ago, and the community today continues to grow."
