On August 2, 2003 The Associated Press reported that "two 17-year-olds face hate crime charges for allegedly lighting a 3 1/2 -foot-tall cross on fire in front of a College Park mosque and Islamic school last week... The teens - one from College Park, the other from Edgewater - were arrested late Thursday after being questioned by Prince George's County fire investigators... Both were charged under Maryland's hate crime laws, with one count each of a defacing property in a religious crime and burning a cross. The charges are misdemeanors punishable by up to three years in prison."
