On August 30, 2003, The Augusta Chronicle reported that "members of a south Georgia Islamic group whose mosque was destroyed by arson last week are finding support from a local Baptist congregation that lost its own house of worship to fire nearly a decade ago. The Aug. 24 fire at the Islamic Center of Savannah brought back painful memories for the Rev. Matthew Southall Brown. He immediately thought of the challenges his own congregation faced in October 1993, when St. John Baptist Church was lost to an accidental fire."
