On January 7, 2006 The Kansas City Star reported, "By promoting religious tolerance, a new initiative at the University of Missouri-Columbia aims to change campus climate by teaching faculty to help students discuss difficult, morality-based subjects. 'Religious differences often prompt divisiveness or conflict in the classroom around values-laden topics,' said Roger L. Worthington, an associate professor in the MU College of Education... Worthington cited a recent study that indicated religious intolerance was one of the most commonly reported sources of hate incidents on campus. The same study also found that many students from the Middle East said they had been harassed at MU... MU was one of 27 U.S. colleges and universities to win a $100,000 grant from the Ford Foundation last month to promote freedom of expression and to host 'difficult dialogues' on topics that generally fuel emotionally charged debate on campus. The grant will be used to train about 40 faculty members from disciplines across campus and to hold public and campus forums."
