On November 7, 2004 Associated Press reported, "a proposed policy at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire would prohibit students from practicing religion for their required community service. Students are required to complete 30 hours of volunteer work to graduate, but the new policy would prevent them from conducting, recruiting or preaching religion to fulfill that. Volunteer projects that require religious membership also would not qualify. The university's academic policies committee approved the policy Oct. 26 by a vote of 8-2 and the University Senate is scheduled to discuss it Tuesday. University administrators proposed the policy under legal advice to maintain the separation of church and state, said Associate Vice Chancellor Steven Tallant."
