On October 20, 2005 a press release reported, "The south Asian community is joining together and hosting the very first Divali Nagar in Toronto, Canada. This is in celebration of Divali which will be celebrated worldwide on Tuesday, November 1. This Divali Nagar (city of Divali, which is a large exhibition area) will showcase Hindu Parampara (Hindu traditions) with displays and exhibits of Hinduism. This will be a two day event held on October 28 and 29 at the Toronto Congress Center and will feature performers from Punjab, India, South and Central India and the very popular Indar Kanhai from the Caribbean. 'This event is meant to showcase Hinduism and provide a place for Hindus and non-Hindus to appreciate the rich and powerful culture of Hinduism,' said Nirvan Balkissoon President of the Divali Nagar Committee."
