On March 11, 2004 India West reported, "Three Indian Americans in California, each seeking to become the first Indian American elected to the U.S. Congress since Dilip Singh Saund represented California's Imperial Valley about 40 years ago, went down to defeat in the state primary March 2. In the high-profile race in San Mateo County, incumbent Congressman Tom Lantos easily turned away attorney Ro Khanna in District 12's Democratic primary. The vote total for Lantos was 55,097, or 74 percent, to 14,651 (20 percent) for Khanna, with M. Abu-Ghazalah a distant third with 5,063 (7 percent)."
