On June 29, 2003 the Wisconsin State Journal reported that "an internationally known Buddhist monk and scholar will travel to Wisconsin in August to offer a retreat aimed at police officers and other community service workers... 'Protecting and serving without stress or fear' is the name of the non-sectarian program offered by Thich Nhat Hanh, a peace activist and poet who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967... He is a leading proponent of 'engaged Buddhism,' a way of life and a spiritual practice that seeks active engagement with the world... Children and families are invited to the Aug. 24-29 retreat as well as police officers, firefighters, health-care workers, educators and 'all others desiring a more peaceful, nonviolent way of life.'"
