Sikhs in Penang came out in full force to showcase the community’s vibrant culture and the best of their hospitality at a gathering at Fort Cornwallis in George Town last Saturday.

Thousands converged on the venue to mark two important events — the anniversary of the inauguration of the Khalsa (the fraternity of the Pure Ones and Saint Soldiers) and the celebration of the Sikh harvest festival.

Organised by the Penang Sikh Naujawan Sabha (Youth Wing of the Penang Sikh Association), the Vasakhi Fest 2009 saw cultural performances such as the Gidda (Punjabi folk dance), Bhangra and various traditional Malaysian dances.

There was also an informative exhibition on the history, music and culture of the community as well as authentic Punjabi food cooking, handicraft and henna art demonstrations.

Visitors, including foreign tourists, were also served free chappati, rice and a host of delicious vegetarian treats.
