On March 29, 2002, The San Francisco Chronicle featured a story about a Thai Temple's food and fundraising efforts. "Neighborhoods have food secrets that aren't really that secret to people who have lived there for a while. ... The buffet of Thai food set out every Sunday morning by members of the Wat Mongkolratanaram in Berkeley is one of those finds. From about 9 a.m. until the food runs out at 2 or 3 p.m., members of the Thai Buddhist temple offer an expansive lunch to the public. They have been cooking and serving Thai food for a little more than a decade as a way to raise money for various building projects." The article continued, "The mix of diners includes students from the University of California at Berkeley, monks and families from the temple, neighbors and lovers of Thai food who travel from parts of the East Bay and beyond." On one Sunday each month, students perform traditional dances in the temple courtyard.
