Anything that has mass or light is energy itself. So everything has energy. Not a new idea. It comes compliments of Albert Einstein.

But the concept isn't just for particle physicists. It's also for everyday people who want to be aware of the energies around and inside them, the better to manage them.

Taoists, who adhere to a Chinese philosophy based on the teachings of Lao Tsu, have held since the third century B.C. that a universal energy, or qi, flows through everyone and everything. The tradition makes managing those energies a spiritual art.

Enter Mei Jin Lu, an ordained Taoist spiritual healer who helps people apply the principles of Taoism to their lives to achieve peace and happiness. She studies the tradition in the Chang Chun Guan Taoist Temple in central China, where she returns yearly to work with the monks of the Dragon's Gate sect.

Her practice is located in the Center for Holistic Wellness in Denville, where she also offers Tao-based workshops, including a recent one called "Space Clearing Brings New Energy for a New Year." She began it simply: There are some places people never want to leave. Good energy. There are other places people instinctively want to flee. Bad energy.

"We all feel energy," Lu said. "Some sensitive people can be so affected that energy influences their moods and emotions. When good energy meets good energy, it multiples. When bad energy meets bad energy, it multiplies."

The goal of the workshop (and life): Recognize and clear away negative energy, which the Chinese call bad qi.
