On July 27, 2005 the Rocky Mountain News reported, "U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo plans to meet with some Muslim leaders and ignore others in the wake of his controversial remarks about Islamic holy sites. The Littleton Republican faced an international outcry over a recent radio interview in which he suggested the United States could threaten to 'take out' Muslim holy sites if radical Islamic terrorists launch nuclear attacks in U.S. cities... Tancredo has refused calls to apologize or resign, saying he was speaking hypothetically and that he does not advocate taking such a 'draconian' action. He has rejected calls to meet with The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which was among the first groups to criticize the remarks. However, Tancredo has agreed to meet with Muslim leaders he considers more moderate... Officials for CAIR said Tancredo was making a mistake by not including them in the meeting. 'If they want to talk to mainstream, moderate Muslims, this is the organization to talk to,' said Corey Saylor, government affairs director for CAIR. 'We work regularly with government officials. We've trained FBI members (in sensitivity to Muslims). I don't think you can get more mainstream than that.' ... When meetings take place, CAIR will not be included, [Tancredo spokesman Will Adams] said. 'We don't think they represent moderate Muslims.'"
