FOR the present generation of Australian students, the world is a far more complicated place than the one their parents faced at the same age.

Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, many school-age Australians have found more to worry about than exams, homework and playground bullies.

Concerns about terrorism and the way the world deals with it saw students react in two very different ways last week.

Dozens of Melbourne secondary-school students joined a protest against US President George Bush and his "war on terror", but others gathered to take a more peaceful approach to tackling terrorism.

Students from Jewish, Muslim and Christian backgrounds came together for an annual "interfaith day", where meeting rather than marching was the preferred action.

Though anxiety levels have been rising, so have innovative suggestions about how to create a better understanding between students of different faiths, to nip potential conflict in the bud.
