On May 29, 2002 The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that "detectives investigating a suspicious fire and explosion Saturday at the Islamic Center of San Diego say there is no indication the incident was a hate crime... The center has been the target of hate crimes and vandalism since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, police say."
