Suspected Hate Crime in San Joaquin Valley: Second Yemeni Shopkeeper Shot

On December 8, 2001, The San Francisco Chronicle reported "Second Yemeni shot in valley: Tulare County grocer wounded 2 months after Reedley slaying." The article noted, "Mr. Albusaisa... was in stable condition yesterday after he was shot -- becoming the the second Yemeni immigrant in the region to be attacked since Sept. 11." The article continued, "In Reedley, 50 miles to the north, another shopkeeper was fatally shot two months ago. ... Abdo Ali Ahmed, 51... was killed... after receiving a death threat and a hate note deriding his ethnicity. ... Police said they do not know the motivation for Albusaisa's shooting, but Ahmed's relatives say they suspect he was shot because of his Middle Eastern heritage."
