On July 3, 2004 The Ann Arbor News reported, "Dr. Kirk Laman and other Sufis in the area gathered at Eastern Michigan University four days last week to travel deeper in prayer with their Sufi guide, Shaykh Muhammad Sa'id al-Jamal ar-Rifa'i ash-Shadhuli. For 20 years, Shaykh Muhammad, 73, was an Islamic judge in Palestine and now heads the Higher Sufi Council of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. He is the main teacher at the Mosque of al-Aqsa on Temple Mount in Jerusalem, regarded the third holiest site of Islam. As a Sufi teacher, Shaykh Muhammad is speaking in five American cities this summer, including Ypsilanti."
