College students of wide-ranging faiths from across the country worked toward the common goal of understanding religious diversity Saturday at the University of Puget Sound.
In one group, five students of different faiths – Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Unitarian Universalist and Jewish – talked in the college cafeteria about some of the barriers to interfaith discussions.
“For a long time, I thought I was the only Muslim,” Maherin Ahmed, 22, said about the students at her school, Whitman College in Walla Walla. “It’s difficult to have interfaith dialogues when you’re the only person of that faith.”
She later discovered two or three other Muslim students at Whitman.
Ahmed is among 62 students from 20 colleges and universities who are meeting at UPS through Monday for Coming Together 4, a four-day, nationwide conference of student religious leaders. Nine students from UPS in Tacoma are taking part.
