On October 6, 2003 San Mateo County Times described the homecoming of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Apinderjit Grewal, the 21-year-old Sikh Marine who spent the last six months in Iraq searching for UN banned chemical or biological weapons. Upon his return last Sunday, Grewal was met by crowds of his young cousins, friends, reporters and members of the Burlingame, California City Council. According to the Times, "While the younger Grewal served overseas, his mother Jagdeep made headlines in the Bay Area by festooning her town in yellow ribbons, and stirring up a minor controversy... After a long and heated public meeting in early April, the council voted to designate a week as Yellow Ribbon Week, saying the ribbons were not a political statement and could be condoned by the city.
