On June 24, 2003 Newsday reported on "Spirituality in Black America, a six-hour PBS series explores religion from slavery to the present... This is the larger story told in 'This Far by Faith,' in effect a 'prequel' to 'Eyes on the Prize,' Henry Hampton's acclaimed history of the civil rights movement, which first aired on public TV more than a decade ago. It takes us back to the beginning of the African experience of America and demonstrates that without spirituality and faith, there wouldn't have been - probably couldn't have been - such a movement. As theologian James Cone says in the series' first hour, 'Faith is the most powerful force in the world. It is the light people can't put out.'"
