On October 3, 2003 Laurel Leader described Athena Schaffer in the midst of a spellcasting ceremony to protect her town from a hurricane. Schaffer and her family are among the estimated 1,000 Wiccans currently living in Laurel, Maryland. The Schaffers belong to a coven of witches called the American Chapter of the Sherwood Coven."'
