Rabbi Marc Schneier attended a summit of imams and rabbis last November designed to promote better understanding between the Islam and Judaism.
The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, of which Schneier is president, hosted the summit and, from that, a Weekend of Twinning was born.
The weekend, set for Nov. 21-23, will pair one rabbi with one imam at synagogues and mosques across North America to discuss ways to fight Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. Fifty synagogues and fifty mosques are scheduled to participate.
"Our dream was 25 mosques and 25 synagogues," Schneier said. "We never imagined the response would be so overwhelming. It's very exciting the outpouring of support for the program in both the Jewish and Muslim-American communities."
The kickoff event will be held 7:30-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, sponsored by The Ewa and Dan Abraham Project. The featured speakers will be Schneier, named by Newsweek as one of America's leading rabbis, and Imam Muhammed Shamsi Ali, spiritual leader of The Islamic Cultural Center of New York.
The subject of their discussion will be "Confronting Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism."
