Soap Opera to Portray Hindu Wedding in Upcoming Episode

On September 22, 2004 The Times of India reported, "Britain's most popular soap opera, 'Coronation Street' will create history by portraying a Hindu wedding on the show in their upcoming episode. According to Hello magazine, the onscreen wedding promises to be the most extravagant ceremony on the show. In the grand episode, shop girl Sunita, played by Shobhana Gulati, will marry her boss Dev played by Jimmy Harshikin in a traditional Hindu ceremony. 'This will be the first Hindu wedding in the Street's history, and probably in British soap,' a spokesperson for production company Granada, was quoted by Hello magazine as saying. 'It is a long way from our roots,' he added. According to reports the production company has built an temple and Indian restaurant on the sets of the show while the bride will reportedly wear an embroidered red sari, the groom will be clad in a traditional cream ensemble."
