On August 23, 2002 India Abroad reported that "over 120 young Sikh professionals from the US and a few from Canada came together last month at Georgetown University in Washington DC, to discuss ways and means to confront the challenges the community faces in the aftermath of 9/11. Sikhs have, by virtue of their beards and turbans, become particular targets of hate crimes and racial profiling, particularly by airport security personnel, in the aftermath of last September's terrorist strikes."
