The Guru Nanak Sikh Temple was filled with those who were participating in the Vaisakhi celebration last Sunday.

Inside the temple at 4919 61st St. NE, children happily played tag across one corner of the temple's floor containing stacks of hundreds of shoes. Volunteers served a vegetarian lunch to families in the kitchen. People of all ages quietly knelt together as prayers were read upstairs.

Outside the temple, 17-year-old Gagan Manhas waited patiently in the parking lot for his favorite part of the celebration that marks the establishment of the Sikh faith and Sikh New Year.

“It's our holiest day,” he said. “My favorite part of the whole day is when they take the flag down and wash it.”
