Sikhs Celebrate Nanakshahi New Year With Prayers

Sikh community of Southern California celebrated the arrival of the 542nd New Year with prayers at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Walnut here on March 13. As per the Nanakshahi calendar, named after the founder Guru Nanak, the month of Chet is the first month in the calendar and it starts from March 14.

Nearly- 2000 community members participated in the celebrations that started in the evening. Program started with Keertan by Bhai Shinghara Singh followed by Bhai Bharat Singh Dehradun Waale. Children of Guru Angad Dev Academy recited Shabads welcoming the New Year. Bhai Bhupinder Singh Delhi Waale recited Shabads in his melodious voice. Bhai Raghbir Singh, Head Granthi and Hazoori Raagi, Gurdwara Walnut, shared the importance of Nanakshahi calendar and asked the large congregation to work for spiritual awakening and up-liftment.
