Thousands of Sikhs from Northern California celebrated the formal dedication of a major communal hall Sunday at the Sikh Temple of Sacramento, attended by their religion's spiritual leader from India.

With prayer and food and the solemn hoisting of the Sikh flag, the temple in West Sacramento greeted thousands of congregants and others as it opened its langar hall – a community kitchen and dining hall next to the temple's worship building.

The langar plays an important role in the Sikh tradition, and the dedication was important enough to draw a visit from Giani Gurbachan Singh, spiritual leader of roughly 25 million Sikhs worldwide.
