On August 3, 2003 the Tri Valley Herald reported that "about 60 young followers of the Sikh religion from across the globe are competing in the annual Sikh Youth Symposium speech contest, taking place at temples -- called gurdwaras -- in Fremont, El Sobrante and Hayward this weekend. The first day of the grueling contest began Friday in Fremont [CA]... The contest, open to those from 6 to 22 years old to flex their speaking skills in English and, in some cases, Punjabi, the Indian language spoken by many Sikhs. The speeches are devotional in nature, discussing literary works and religious themes."
