The city's first Sikh temple soon could be built in East Vineland.

The city Planning Board last week approved construction of a gurdwara -- a place of worship for the Sikh religion -- on South Lincoln Avenue. The South Jersey Sikh Society hopes to begin construction soon and plans a March opening for Vineland's first such temple.

The city has roughly 80 religious centers and places of worship, but the gurdwara would be a first in Vineland's history, City Planner Steve Hawk said.

"I believe there are a lot of people in our community who travel elsewhere for their services," Planning Board member Maria Perez said. "I think they should have their services right here in this beautiful building in the city of Vineland."
