Sikhs will break ground today for the Sikh National Center following a colorful three-mile parade celebrating the birthday of Guru Nanak, founder of the religion.

The parade, or Nagar Keertan, begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Gurdwara Sahib, 5512 Breen Road.

Several hundred cars, some sporting bright orange flags and religious banners, and at least two floats will proceed from the temple to the site of the new center, spokesman Harjit S. Galhotra said.

The hour-long groundbreaking ceremony at 7500 N. Sam Houston Parkway West will include prayers, hymns and a martial-arts demonstration by five sword-carrying Sikhs in saffron robes.

A model and plans of the new 38,000-square-foot building will be on display.
